In this series, professional concept artist and illustrator Tyler Edlin will walk you through the workflow needed to create pro character designs like those used in AAA games and major films. Through the creation of a Fantasy Mage called Kari, Tyler will demonstrate a professional workflow, as well as covering all of the design considerations needed to create concepts from scratch, and why design is so important to artists in these fields.
In the world of professional concept art, the artist is often given parameters the design must fall within. However in this case Tyler will start with open design characteristics so we can really explore all of the questions and design concerns an artist needs to ask before ever creating an image. By creating a good basic backstory, we can create a compelling, and correct, character much more easily.
From there, we will explore character archetypes, silhouettes, and color palettes to be sure we chose the best possible design to represent Kari. After that, we dive into creating our final design.
To finalize our course we’ll look at proper proportions and posing, as well as basic atmosphere. This will help us to guarantee a great looking final piece.Now ready for submission to our client, our piece will have the best chance of being accepted as a final, ready to move on to production.
Tyler entirely paints this concept, no photo-bashing here! Although that is used in the industry quite a bit, it’s important to gain the skill to paint by hand first. At nearly 4 hours of content, we think Tyler has put together one of the best learning tools out there to help you reach your concept art goals.
