How can I create a rigid body and then make it fall through several objects?

You need xsi 4.x advanced for that. Select any object and then do Simulate -> Create -> Rigid Body -> Active or Passive Rigid Body. Move your object up, add gravity to your scene and hit play. Now your object will fall down. If you want it to hit other objects, then select your rigid body go to Simulate -> Modify -> Environment -> Set Obstacle and then select the other object. Adjust the collision types, cause per default it's bounding box. And that's not usefull if you want the rigid body to fall through other objects.

Check you manuals for a more in depth description.

    ...other people's failure. Not yours.
That wouldn't be a very good path.
