I assume you are working with Windows, not Linux. You have to create an environment variable called HOME via "Control Panel" -> "System" -> "Environment Variables". Set its value to the path you want to show up in Houdini's file open/save dialog. But keep in mind, that Houdini stores its config-files in a sub-folder of this path. So you loose all your individual settings until you copy this special folder from somewhere in "C:\My Documents\<your login name>\" to your new HOME-path.

i tried to change the $HOME in the environment variable (in control panel - system) but i didn't work. in open/save dialog , the $home still point to default directory. why is that?
    i'm using window XP.

Sometimes windows doesn't take over new environment variable values immediately. I found, that loggin out and in activated these. Another possible fault would be, that you named the variable $HOME instead of HOME. The dollar-sign isn't necessary.
