    Problems with CSS

    My studies is not in art, so my website attempt is pretty poor compared to the others I have seen in this forum. However, here is my first revision of my website and would like some feedback on it:

    The look that I am trying to achieve seems to only display correctly in IE6, but there are a few problems with Gecko based browsers. The problem I am having is the border of the menu remains the same width as the text. I explicitly specified the width of the menu to be 135px, but the browser seems to resize it to be the same length as the text.

    Here is the CSS code:

    .side_menu_on {
    position: relative;
    width: 135px;
    border-top: thin solid;
    border-color: rgb(100, 100, 100);

    Does anyone know how to set the width of a border independent of text width?

    Often browsers would use the default setting only if the text doesn't force it to be bigger. A possible solution is to force the text to be smaller. But I don't know how realistic that would be in this case.
