hello to all you mighty Maya masters!

Does anyone know what typically causes this bad effect in the shadows? and what i should do to stop it?
    Its a directional light.

I am not a Maya user but I know in 3DS Max there are many rendering settings to consider depending on which renderer you use. Point being you may need to tweak the settings to get a better result. Typically in Max the lowest (ie. fastest rendering) settings are set by default.

What settings do you have for your light/shadows (screeny of the Attribute Editor would help determine your issue)?

Also what rendering engine are you using Software/mentalRay etc.

Kinda looks like the depth map resolution is too low, but that's just guess work
There is an exception to every rule, apart from this one.

Actually i solved it. i smoothened out the shadow and i simply removed the glass from the window as i liked the sky the way it was afterwards.
