Because fatgav forced me! - Dragonfly in Blender

He didn't really, but I have to admit he got the ball rolling.

I happened to have chosen the dragonfly for the first Blender 102 assignment. I thought I was being original, then Gav posted (just teasin' ya, buddy ).

Nothing impressive so far. I haven't really spent a lot of time on the assignment yet, but there's still a few days left.

I started with making an extremely basic thorax and extruded out the abdomen and tail. I started focusing on the tail quite a bit and just moved to the abdomen.

I have noticed the thorax being way to big now. The next step for me is to get the thorax down a bit more, get a proper size so I can then extrude the head.

Decided to take a break from the thorax and work on some wings from simple planes. My goal is to use "Solidify" to add some thickness and apply the modifier and attach them to the body ("Solidify" results in the attaching end to be a quad face, which can easily be attached).

I'm not going to model the wing structure for the assignment like some are doing unless I finish everything else and have extra time. But I will get some level of detail afterwards. Looks really fun, but it's "time management" I'm worried about.

I think I'm almost done the basic shape for the thorax. I need to look at more reference images (I do base myself on reference, but I am freehand-modeling it).

Next : Little detail work on the thorax and extruding the head.

Everytime I tell myself "I'm done for now, I'll continue tomorrow!" I see myself working another two hours or so...

The head was one heck of a test of [my lack of] skills, patience, and I may have discovered that I have some OCD. :P

I still need to work on the head itself. The eyes were the challenge. I may tweak the size of the eyes once the head has a better shape, but I'm done with them for now.

Time is starting to get tight for the assignment (for me, i.e.: for the time I can put in). The eyes on the head really took way too much time than it should have for "this" level of details (I swear, I wasn't this obsessive before!). I should be adding more components to the body so I have the topo to start the legs at the very least.

Sweet! Yeah; I need to drag myself away from the wings, really... but I find them relaxing!

I have no idea really how to add the level of detail I'm looking-for for the head and thorax... that's why I did everything else :P.

For logical reasons, I'm keeping the wing-attachement until the very end.

Remember that you can "collapse" modifiers... if you feel, for instance, that you want more detail across your model, setup a subdiv surface modifier to one level of subD and bake it in... or something!
