A couple more apps that I find very useful.

    http://shadermap.com/ creates displacement/normal/Amb Occlusion/specular/DUDV maps

http://www.xnormal.net/1.aspx creates high quality maps of a high res model for a low res model.

I dunno if any of you out there are Amazon customers with existing copies of PhotoShop Elements 9 or not, but for those that are, you might have seen this e-mail come across (I had this in my inbox yesterday), and I actually saved $400 on a copy of PhotoShop CS5 as a result of this, which I felt was *really* nice. So the price for me wound up being $260 only, which is quite significant. In case any of you that owned PS Elements through Amazon recently, this was the offer that came through:

Guess I'll definitely be switching over to CS5 really quick when it finally arrives. Elements was fun, but...opportunities like this one that I was lucky to take advantage of, it's about time I went for a REAL PhotoShop app...definitely want to make Zak happy that I'm actually using a full Photoshop app instead of that dreaded Elements software.

I think i prefer GIMP to Photoshop, but i do defiantly prefer Maya/XSI to Blender. Although, i won't degrade Blender, because they offer very good power with the price of ON THE HOUSE.

Actually, I have found a cheaper alternative to Mudbox and ZBrush, I believe DAZ 3D Studio was for character development, last I checked...but whether or not it was meant to be an alternative to these two, that's still up in the air, but it is useful for creating character models that could be used for Unity, since it does export to. FBX for a $100 fee, iirc. However, I still prefer to just model in DAZ Studio, then animate and export from Messiah Studio. I'll have to see if Messiah does in fact accept the .DZ2 format, I'll check.

EDIT: Nope, guess Messiah won't take .DZ2 files, which is sad, but that doesn't mean that it won't accept other formats to import that DAZ Studio can export to, there are plenty of options. Although Messiah won't import .FBX files, it will only export to .FBX, iirc.

Found a great program a while back:

    http://www.filterforge.com/

Its not really an alternative for anything on the list, just a great program for indie games. It generates tiled textures with normal maps for pretty much anything. Only $99 too Website says it has 7948 different textures at time of writing, all of which can be customised pretty extensively within the program. Definitely check it out.

    Hope this helps someone

What about Carrara 8/C8 Pro? Where would this fit under, in terms of app? I know that this was a cheaper alternative to something...forget what now, maybe it was a cheaper rival of Maya, but not sure.

Reason I was asking, was because I am set on the combination of Poser Pro 2010 and Carrara 8 Pro (don't worry, I am a DAZ Platinum member now, so Carrara Pro is cheaper than you think it is), and to me, this would be a good combination to use with Unity, since both .DAE and .FBX are supported by Unity, and both apps have support for Unity exports directly, on top of that, which I am thrilled about. So something like this might work out for the better, and more budget friendly than using Maya or 3ds Max, imo.
