It does look like a great program. But one of the gotcha's is (as of this date) $100.00 exit fee and quite possibly more costs for website hosting depending on how you want to meet the other eligibility requirements.

VelariaKnight: I thought they waived the $100 exit fee recently?

I thought houdini did not support fbx exporting.

GIMP can be used instead of Photoshop for a free app, and Mind Node has a free version for a mind map program.

    If you're a student, there's also Microsoft's Dreamspark program: www.dreamspark.com/

jmz2k: they might have. In my digging on Scott Gu's Website and through some blogging a bout it I didn't see the waiver. When I check the site a couple weeks ago it was still there. It could have changed. Terms & Conditions can change so quickly that what I just said might be outdated an hour from now. That said I wasn't panning the idea completely. I'm seriously considering one of the other Spark programs myself.

Now to help keep my post from being completely off topic...
    Another Paint program is Paint.NET

Of course a cheaper alternative to PhotoShop CS5 is PhotoShop Elements 9, either that or Paint Shop Pro X3. Although I'm pretty sure that the functionality of those are quite limited. Also, cheaper 3D modeling titles are MilkShape 3D and AC3D, I believe, those are others to look into.

No, it doesn't...that caught me off guard, too. However, I have to wonder if there are formats from Houdini that Unity would accept.
Although another "free" modeling app that segfault has suggested was XSI/SoftImage Mod Tool, which is also pretty cool, just as long as you don't mind the "Mod Tool" watermark all over your renders.

Great ideas everyone! It would be awesome if they keep coming as I plan to update the list constantly. Now I'm wondering if I should also include cheaper alternatives besides just free alternatives.

This is a great opportunity for anyone with a student email address. Downloaded mine last week.
