I'm a little bit worried about RavenDB. It's very important to the MMO, but it's not free for commercial purposes outside this class. That's ok for learning, but what if I build my own (even if small, for friends only) MMO and I'd like to have a server up and running? Do I have to pay loads of money for the license?

Another problem is with Unity PRO. Offcourse it's WAY too pricy for me atm (don't get me wrong: I'm extremely gratefull that the standard edition is free, because it's a great piece of software), and I'd be ok if my MMO implementation is shadows-less or super water reflections... but what if a critical component (I'm afraid render targets would play a part in the minimap and that's too important to miss) can't be done with Unity Pro? I hope in these cases, we can work togheter on a Standard-version of the Pro-one. In this way, who hasn't the Pro version can follow along pretty nicely too

When it comes to shadows, the standard version has the capability to bake out lightmaps, so you won't be entirely shadowless, you will just be missing the dynamic realtime shadows. As for the mini-map, there are alternatives to doing it in realtime through the use of a render target.

As for the pricing of software for commercial usage, I don't think that is too much of an issue if you make something that is commercially viable. Its only fair that if you use a superb tool and make money as a result of that, that the people who produced the tool get a slice of that pie. If you end up with work that is commercially viable then you will be able to get the required licences through a number of different means, such as a loan from the bank for your business, or some outside investment, there are lots of options when it comes to this, but i'm no expert on this sort of stuff and maybe somebody else can clarify this.

You could try learning http://www.mongodb.org/ independently I believe it is free to use (open source).

But I understand there is no real worries about you playing your game with friends you just cannot sell it that is what commercial means.

Thanks for the tip. I wonder how difficult would be to change database software from RavenDB to MongoDB in the future, maybe we can look into it when the time's right

HOUDINI!!!! I just found out that it works directly with Unity without going through Blender for any models. The free version will not export animation or procedural textures but for static models and UV based textures it works awesome! The units work perfect as well because it is already based in meters unlike many apps. You can't use the importer but if you just save the files into the folder then Unity imports just fine.
