Okay, about my point of using sex to sell a product...

You don't need to break the rules of the site to break the rules of good taste.
I'm not expecting someone to use full-blown pornography here, but that doesn't mean that people can't use "sexy" to sell their products. And someone who is sufficiently skilled certainly can portray an image that gives off a sexy vibe without actually violating the forum rules. As fatgav said, a few well-used inanimate objects can be used to arouse.

And that's basically my point. Arousal. I think there should just be a simple rule to not allow the use of any imagery that is sexy or arousing.

I just think that, this being a a more "pure" form of photography that we contest over, we should disallow certain elements that fall secondary to that goal.

Let's talk with a few solid examples.
Let's say that we were taking a picture of a soft drink as if we were going to sell it. In the spirit of the contest, someone would set up a coda can, have clean drops of water cascading down the sides, gleaming in the light, the can rests in a bed of ice, and a well-chosen background augments the colors of the can and the bold statement of refreshment!
Alternatively, someone might just find some attractive female model in a low-cut blouse, and take a snapshot of her drinking the soda. Now yes, there is a lot of skill that can be involved in putting this model in good light, setting her into an angle that shows off well her figure, not to mention the effort of getting her into just the right clothes with just the right make-up, so on and so forth. But a half-decent photograph of a very beautiful woman would still receive far more attention than the many hours of subtle detail work put into the first example. This content shouldn't be about who has the hottest friends.

I don't think it is fair to discredit the artist who took the more challenging road.

I am not the morality police. I am not going to draw a line in the sand and decide what is in "good taste", and therefore allowed, and "bad taste" which is not.

However, we have never had a problem before. I honestly do not think we will have one. If you really think that a half decent photo of a beautiful woman would receive more votes in this contest than a much higher quality photograph, then I think you are severely underestimating the people posting and voting in these contests.

Yes, most of the folks here do seem like good and upstanding people, but hey, it is the internet. And to be completely fair, I've never really tried to see what folks around here think of certain subjects.
I'm just saying that we should cover our bases is all. But it's not my contest, so do as you will.

I have an idea for a photo. I'm thinking I very well may submit an entry this time, if I don't get too busy.

I have my idea. Hopefully it's funny and sells the 'item'. I ordered a tripod which comes around december 3rd, but I think I'll have to prop my camera up on a bunch of boxes or something before then.

From my description of the topic:

you should be trying to tell a story about what that product represents, not just taking a perfectly lit photo of the product itself
I don't know how you get from "telling a story about what the product represents" to fears of sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll. I feel that a pre-emptive moral panic is unnecessary here. We can deal with it if it ever becomes a problem, or let the forum rules deal with it for us.

By the by, it isn't my contest either. As far as I am concerned, it is a community owned contest, of which I consider myself a part. The whole point of these contests is to get people taking photos and to learn. I just think we should place as few restrictions as possible, and deal with any consequences if they arise.

Anyway, until someone arouses me with their contest entry, I have nothing further to say on this matter
