Cannot move vertex in all directions?

i'm working on a model using planes. everything was working fine until i tried to move a vertex. i used to be able to move it in all directions freely but now i can only move it in the y-direction. i'm wondering if i accidently clicked something that changed this or...??? any help is much appreciated!!!

You might have constraints enabled. Under Edit Geometry rollout set constraints to none.

    Resurrected this old post

I never had this problem until now. I have a mesh that refuses to move vertices along the x axis. I've performed a lot of mirroring and deleting the half to work with one side and mirroring again.
Has anyone ever encountered something like this? I thought it was just bad geometry so I fixed some things but even the simple parts won't move in x. This is all occurring at the 0 point in x, anything on this line isn't working.

Sorry I goofed up, I saw this on google and wrote the reply. I didn't realize this was the max forum, this is a maya related problem, I will repost it there.
