Really need help in straightening a DNA strand in a "Zipper effect"

I have modeled a complete DNA strand, rungs and all. In the model the rungs(the bands that connect the strands in the DNA) separate as the strands stretch out like a zipper. When the strands straighten, by way of using the scale tool, the rungs follow the stretch as well to my dismay. The DNA strand then resembles a tenticle when this happens.
How would I accomplish this "zipper effect" whereby as the strands straighten and separate, breaking the bands connecting them, the bands themselves do not stretch or deform. I merely want the rungs to stay where they are on the strands and follow the separation process on their respective side.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Any chance you could upload a quick video of what it is doing?
And are the rungs separate objects or are they welded to the helixes?

Use aim constraints. The rungs on eyther side of the separation are set to aim at each other until the time of separation then you can key them to aim at a dummy object.

But still a video would help. Start a Youtube account and give us a link to the video.

So what is supposed to happen here? This doesn't look bad to me, although it doesn't look like it does much at all.

I agree. It doesn't seem to be doing anything obviously wrong. But the movement is so subtle. What are you going for?
