    Thank you I agree with you but I think the person I'm doing this for wanted the unraveling to be more dramatic. I found this video and this is what I would like to do with the strand:

    Well there are lots of way that you can do this type of animation. Mostly I would suggest using bones with a spline control. There is one joint where each rung will start. Then use a nonlinear twist deformer on the two spline curves. You may have to use an aim constraint for the individual molecules for each rung to make sure they point at each other.
