Question How to trigger audio file playback?

What is the easiest way that I can programatically cause a web browser to playback a sound file on my website (without using flash)?

I have a wav file (but I could convert it to another format if required) that I would like to playback through the browser at specific points in time. Here is how the website works. I'm using AJAX to dynamically update the website while the player is performing tasks in the window. Once the user clicks on a link AND a specific set of JavaScript variables are set to be true, I would like to play the wav file.

Once the wav file is played, I will be resetting my variables so that the user can repeat the process and have the wav file play again.

Any suggestions how to playback audio files at will like this?
