Your PC has no knowledge of the difference, in fact, to it there is no difference anyway. You need to understand more about networking at a guess. It depends a little on how your messenger app works, and how its not working.

As long as no firewalls block you, and what you have done is routable, it should work.

I dont think networking in delphi is the issue. What exactly do you want to learn about networking?

I want to learn how to communicate with WAN connections, at the minute i only know how to communicate with LAN connections (using TClientSocket and TServerSocket).

The only difference between the 2 is the IP Address you use.

If your machine was 192.168.10.1, all on a LAN are going to be 192.168.10.x (most likely) but for a wan, its no different to using the internet or your local network, it will just be a different IP range.

So, if you made a TCP IP connection to say ftp.microsoft.com - its no different your PC has no way of knowing theres a difference. This isnt a delphi issue, its a way of thinking about it issue.

Which says the target actively refused it.

ipchicken would report your external IP address, not an internal one. Just ask the guy for his IP.
