    Modelling with maya, applying materials

Here is one question from 'just started using maya yesterday'-level user:

I know the general process of producing something in maya and exporting it to UEd. First doing the model, applying the materials on it and aligning them properly, exporting to UEd and importing the textures and applying them on the model.

Point that leaves me wondering, is how to apply these materials in maya? Can I import my textures (.bmp) to maya? How do I place and align them on my model?

Any help or tutorial linkage much appreciated

    1. Open Help > Library... (or press F1)
    2. Click the link "Instant Maya"
    3. Scroll in the left frame to chapter 6. ("6 Rendering"), you'll find everything you ever wanted to know about texturing and rendering there
