The Unreal Tournament 3 "Old School" Contest sponsored by Epic Games

We have been feeling lately that the Unreal mod community is not quite as big as it used to be back in the days of Unreal and Unreal Tournament. There just doesn't seem to be as much excitement or involvement in Unreal modding as a whole, and we think it's high time that we did something about it.

So we are launching a new contest that will hopefully give the mod community a much-needed boost! We're going to give 3 people the chance to earn some pretty sweet prizes, and one person the chance to have their level reviewed by none other than Cliff Bleszinski himself!

Now, we know what most of you are probably thinking. "There's no way I could enter a contest like that! I don't even know how to create a million-polygon normal map!"

WRONG! This is an old school contest in which contestants are ONLY allowed to use the assets that ship along with Unreal Tournament 3. NO custom content whatsoever is allowed. No textures, no meshes, no animations, NOTHING that isn't included and ready to use from a basic UT3 installation! All you need to know is how to make a fun-to-play map!

Official Contest Overview

Rules and Regulations

So here's an overview of the contest rules. To enter, you ONLY need the following:

  • A playable Deathmatch UT3 map using ONLY assets included with UT3. Pay attention to this! You may not use any custom models, textures, scripts, animations, etc. You are ONLY allowed to use the assets that ship with Unreal Tournament 3. You may, however, create Kismet sequences, particle emitters, materials, and any other assets that can be created solely inside of Unreal Editor.

  • You'll need to create a thread in the UT3 Old School Contest forum on 3D Buzz. The thread must contain a subject line consisting of the official name of the Contest (Old School Unreal Contest) and the full and real name of the Contestant. No other words in the thread subject line are allowed. Contestants must finish the Contest with a total of at least ten (10) update posts within this forum, each containing an overview of current progress at the time of the post and at least one screenshot of your work.

  • Final entries must be completed by 11:59:59 PM CST on June 30, 2008

  • No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited.

Judging

All entries will be judged on the following:

  • Artistic and Architectural Style. We want to see how well you can use the assets that come with the game to make a believeable environment for the player.

  • Originality. No remakes of old levels are allowed. We will be looking for you to put your own personal touch on your level in order to make a unique gaming experience for the player.

  • Flow and Gameplay. This is absolutely key. It doesn't matter what your level looks like if it plays terribly. It should be fun for the players so they want to keep coming back for more.

  • Performance. If your map won't run at an acceptable framerate on an average system, then the odds are that a great deal of people will simply not be able to enjoy it. There is always a compromise between what looks good and what will run well. We want to see who can overcome the limitations and make a level that not only looks great, but runs smooth as well.

  • Quality of Work In Progress Update Posts. This is just as important as every other part of the judging. We want to see your progress detailed as you go along and we want others to learn from you as well as help you through the development process by providing comments and criticisms. Think of this as the testing process for your map.

Prizes

So what can you Win? There will be 1 winner and 2 runners-up. Here's what is up for grabs:

1st and 2nd runners-up will receive the following:

  • A copy of Unreal Tournament 3 signed by the Epic Games development team!
  • A PlayStation 3 game console (or $500 cash)
  • An up to 30-minute screen captured gameplay review of your level by 3D Buzz's own Unreal gaming fanatics, Logan and Terry!

The contest winner will receive the following:

  • $1,000 cash prize!
  • An up to 30-minute screen captured review of your level by Epic Games Design Director Cliff Bleszinski!

Just think of the implications! Your work will be looked at by Cliff Bleszinski, one of the leading game developers of our time! And keep in mind that MANY of Epic's current employees started out as mod makers! Who knows what your efforts might lead to?

Complete Rules & Regulations

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY
VOID WHERE PROHIBITED BY LAW.

Eligibility

Entrants age 13 and over are eligible to participate. Contestants who are minors, however, must have a parent/legal guardian submit written authorization. Employees and agents of contest sponsors, including, but not limited to 3D Buzz, Inc., Epic Games, their respective agents, officers, parent companies, affiliates and subsidiaries (collectively "Contest Sponsors"), and members of their immediate families (parents, children, siblings, spouses) and/or persons living in the same households as such persons, whether related or not, are ineligible to enter the Contest and cannot win prizes. This contest is governed by the laws of the United States of America and of the State of Tennessee. This contest is void where prohibited. Contestants are responsible for compliance with applicable laws in jurisdictions where they reside.

Contest Rules

Contestants must create a Deathmatch type level using only those assets found within the various content packages included with the retail version of Unreal Tournament 3. No external assets whatsoever may be included with the level. This includes, but is not limited to static meshes, skeletal meshes, textures, UnrealScripts, or any other element that is created from within or must be imported from any application external to the Unreal Editor software.

Contestants are allowed to make use of the tools within Unreal Editor to produce their own creations that are derived from those assets that are included with the retail version of Unreal Tournament 3, but only as long as those assets are used entirely within Unreal Editor and are not exported or altered in any form or fashion. Such creations include, but are not limited to materials, Kismet scripted sequences, UI scenes, SoundCues, and particle systems.

Throughout the duration of the contest, Contestants will be required to create a simple work-in-progress thread on the 3D Buzz web site, which will be part of the contest registration process outlined below. During the contest, this thread must be updated with a minimum of ten (10) posts that each include a brief overview of the current progress of the level, and at least one screen shot image per post. These posts are subject to the moderation rules of the 3D Buzz website and may not contain foul language or remarks that may be considered obscene, racist, hateful, or otherwise objectionable. The quality and informative nature of these updates will play a factor in the judging process.

All Submissions must be playable with the retail version of Unreal Tournament 3 patched to the latest officially released update. All submissions must be in compliance with the applicable Unreal Tournament End User License Agreement posted at www.unrealtournament3.com.

The closing date for submissions is June 30, 2008. Winners will be announced on the 3D Buzz web site.

Registration

Registration requires that Contestants are registered members of the 3D Buzz web site, which is a free service and requires no purchase.

To compete in the contest, Contestants must create a forum thread on the 3D Buzz web site within the UT3 Old School Contest forum. The thread must contain a subject line consisting of the official name of the Contest (Old School Unreal Contest) and the full and real name of the Contestant. For instance, if a Contestant's name was "Jane Doe" then the title of her thread would be "Old School Unreal Contest - Jane Doe." This naming convention is in place to simplify forum searches. No other words in the thread subject line are allowed.

Contestants must finish the Contest with a total of at least ten (10) update posts within this forum, each containing an overview of current progress at the time of the post and at least one screenshot of your work.

Contestant Plagiarism

While contestants are required to produce regular work-in-progress forum posts regarding the process of their level's construction, we understand that certain contestants may be enticed to use this information to create works based upon other contestants' ideas. This is considered cheating. The work-in-progress posts are required in order to encourage interactivity in the Unreal mod development community, and are not intended for any other purpose.

If any Contestant feels that one of their peers has stolen their ideas to such a degree that their entry has been compromised or damaged, then they are to contact Zak Parrish by email or 3D Buzz PM and outline their claim privately. Under no circumstances should such claims be made in public via the 3D Buzz forum system and doing so may result in disqualification and other consequences pertaining to the 3D Buzz website www.3dbuzz.com including, but not limited to restriction of access to the website itself. 3D Buzz will investigate these claims and will satisfy, to its sole satisfaction, their extent and validity. This investigation may require that either or both parties provide certain information regarding the creation of their levels. In such cases, failure to cooperate may result in disqualification. The decisions from this investigation will be considered final, and 3D Buzz reserves the right to disqualify either or both parties.

By entering the Contest you agree to comply with all the rules and all decisions of the judges and agree to indemnify and hold harmless 3D Buzz, Inc., Epic Games, Inc., and other sponsors from any damages, liability or third party claim related to the Contest.
