PS3 Netflix Instant Streaming Discs Shipping

For those of you with Netflix who don't have an Xbox 360 or haven't heard of PlayOn, the PS3 instant streaming discs have begun shipping so you will be able to enjoy Netflix shows right there on your TV with no hassle...other than having to put in a disc to stream something...so with some hassle.

I signed up for one to see how it works on the PS3, but I can't see me leaving the disc in there all the time and having to put it in to watch something isn't likely since I could just use my Xbox 360 or PlayOn. You see...I am lazy. Maybe someone forgot to notify Netflix of this fact.

Yeah, but it is no greater hassle than putting a movie into my PS3 to play.

I've never heard of PlayOn before, and reading the link looks pretty interesting. But since the only streaming I would really use is YouTube, and PS3 already does YouTube, my question is how well does PlayOn stream YouTube to a PS3? The PS3 itself streams some dumb special version of YouTube that crapifies the quality and limits functionality.

Hopefully Sony will update there XMB eventually(like said in your link), so you don't need the disk.

I could use my Tivo that I don't own to watch movies I don't own and that aren't being shown on TV for me to record? Interesting...but I don't see how that works or even fits into the discussion here.

I know they are adding dedicated software into the XMB later on, but later on is not now.

PlayOn streams Youtube as well as your computer browser streams Youtube, for the msot part. It does rely on the quality of your internet connection, your PC's processing power, and the connection from the PC running PlayOn to your PS3/Xbox 360/Wii. It's actually a really amazing piece of software. I used it to watch Hulu and CBS and sometimes I use it for Netflix when I am too lazy to switch to the actual Netflix app on my Xbox 360. The quality for me is as good as streaming videos straight on my PC through a web browser.

So what's the point of the DVD to begin with? I could maybe understand it being an app or something that you need to install, but why would you need to pop that DVD into the drive every time?

I have a Netflix account but haven't had the chance yet to get it to work with my XB360... instead I have been using it to stream stuff to my laptop lately... heck, right now I got Voltron playing in another tab. I watch less and less TV on an actual TV now a days.

I tried PlayOn (after you told me about it Jeff) but it was a pretty terrible experience for me. The video would play 2 seconds and then pause and then play another 2 seconds. Even if I waited for the whole program to finish streaming to my PC it wasn't a great experience.

I got my email about my disc shipping earlier so I am hoping this will make a difference.

Easy... it fits because you mentioned that Netflix streams on PlayOn and Xbox 360 as well, but it also is a service for Tivo users like myself. Sooooo... in conclusion, I could stream Netflix on my Tivo and won't need a disc at all for my PS3.

I just got my disc and tried it out. It works great. I get none of the stuttering that I got with PlayOn.

It brings up a simple menu to guide through the Watch Instantly queue.

I did not see a means of adding movies via the interface but you can play, rate and remove them.

So now I need to copy all of the movies from my rental list that are watch instantly to the other queue. Very cool

I also got my disc today. Simply awesome. Didn't have to buffer once.
