Pixar vs Dreamworks

I'm blown away that Shrek 2 is the highest grossing animated film ever put out by either studio.

Not that surprised. Pixar makes phenomenal movies that stand the test of time and have a great story behind them... Dreamworks just goes after the latest trends and tries to milk their franchises for all they are worth. Dreamworks aims for the lowest common denominator and because of that they get huge ticket sales.

I liken them to some shallow pop band that is able to get a #1 hit versus some very talented rockband that makes well-written and challenging music, but that doesn't quite get the fame they deserve.

(Now my example isn't quite fair, because DW does make some good movies, but they are definitely made to be more commercial successes, and while Pixar is definitely not hurting for money, they seem to aim more for artistic success - note the difference in the amount of Oscar nominations between the two.)

Ha ha ha! That's pretty hilarious. I do have to say one thing for Dreamworks though...they tend to have more clever references to things only adults would get. There are so many great ones in Madagascar! "IT'S A COOKBOOOOOK!!!"

I honestly think I laugh much harder watching Dreamworks movies, but when it comes to Pixar it seems like a much bigger overall impression is made. They're so much more than comedies whereas Dreamworks films seem to be just that.

^ re-watch any of the earlier DW movies and they simply do not age well. Sure many of them are fairly funny, but they are also a little too trendy for my tastes... It's like looking at fashion trends from the 70s or 80s - most of the pop-culture fashion is just god awful now, but a classy suit from almost any time period still looks nice.

Monsters vs. Aliens was better than anything Pixar has ever made... well The Incredibles comes a close second. I find Pixar too whimsical and a bit too "cutesy". DreamWorks dares to be a bit different. Pixar is getting too formulaic. Although I am impressed with the Toy Story 3 trailer.

Wall-E and UP, are so so different then any child's movie by either pixar disney dreamworks, or whoever you want, they're a lot deeper, you might not like pixar movies and that's fine, but saying that they are not "daring" to be different is just ridiculos, the ones that stay with the normal "kids" formula are dreamworks, and btw i like both.

im a pixar fangirl. always will be. the first few movies i was amazed, Toy Story got me into animation. The last few pull at your heart (Up, particullary) , which is just great to see in an animated film. You'll get common themes in certain parts of both productions sure, but dreamworks, i never feel any emotion for the characters. they're just bubbly, fun, i made a joke ha ha.. things.

I can easily watch most pixar films with the sound off and some music. always interesting. I saw Up two times. First, i watched the film, second, i watched the animation, gestures, facial expressions that you dont notice first time around and the background. Up was definately one of their finest in my opinion. One that everyone could relate to. couples especially.
