Sort of an alternate universe, it's about freedom and control of the government and other things... Brave New World is similar.

  7. 1984 has a lot of influencs in our society. Equalibrium obviously was influenced it. It gave us the term "big brother." It is the inspiration for the most sucessful advertisement ever (Apple's 1984 ad during a super bowl). I don't read a whole lot, but I would definately recommend this book. Even if you don't like it you will become more culturally aware after reading it.

1984 is a great book, it describes the ease with whom people are accepting even the cruelest and inhuman dictatorships (or "dictatorships"). The book maybe is describing a society at the extremes but the meaning is valid and I think everyone should read it, especially if inside him there is the tendency for compromise.

I strongly recommend it and I also recommend the "Animal Farm" (I don't know the exact title because i read it in greek) it is also an exeptional book.

George Orwell was heavily influenced by the Soviet Union and the danger for the society that this way of goverment brought (I am not talking political , I am talking about the lack of personal freedom), bare that in mind when reading the book and you can also recognise the similarities with the nowdays society.

Iv'e just finished reading 1984 for the second time. It is a great book, one of my favourites. As said above also check out Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, and We by Zevgeny Zamyatin. We was the influence for Orwells 1984. Island by Aldous Huxley is also worth checking out, it is a sort of opposite to the worlds described in the other three books.

    Thumbs up

1984 is a great book, I wrote my Higher English paper on it. I do believe I wrote about the theme of betrayal in the book.

As for what its about well, its about a dictatorship called BigBrother, every aspect of the people under the party’s control is scrutinized. I suppose you could say the book is about Winston, the main characters struggle against the dictatorship.

After reading it the second time it occured to me that the info contained in Goldsteins book was possibly how Orwell viewed certain elements in the world. Does anyone else think this is possible
