    Independent film animation

Browsing around these forums I can't help but think that the majority users of 3DS Max are primarily into for the gaming features. Absolutely nothing against gaming; I wouldn't mind getting involved in making one. But are there many out there using Max as their tool of choice for creating stories?

I'd be interested in discussing topics related to independent animation production; basically small-time Pixar people out there. Not so much effects people, but those interested in creating entire stories of any length or genre using Max.

Anyone out there creating or want to be creating 3D stories?

That is something I want to get into. I'm just starting with 3d max ....... only because it is easier access for me. Otherwise I would use Maya.

I've heard that Max and Maya are pretty comperable; Max having slightly better modeling tools and Maya having slightly better animation tools. But I'm not complaining; Max seems to have an amazing tool set. I'd be happy to work in either program, but since I already own Max, I'll be sticking with it for the unforseeable future.

Ultimately it's how well you can pull of your artistic vision and effect your audience that matters most. Look at what John Lassiter did with shorts like "Tin Toy" way before 3D tools matured. The story and characters in the story is what is most important (in my opinion anyway). Hopefully I'll be able to create something with such engaging characters that people forget their watching 3D models. That's my goal anyway.

Sounds good.....I don't think it's a big deal whichever you choose to use maya, lightwave, 3ds, etc. ( I think maya is the best with modelling/texturing and animation)

For me, I'm already writing the script and putting together the characters. I look to game cinematics for most of my inspiration. I hope to get close to that level for the story....... but 3d art and animation are so blasted time consuming, getting the entire thing done is more of a lifetime goal.

Yeah, accually, I first got Max for gaming, but after just starting with Max I decided I would rather make short films. I am really looking forward in seeing how well my movie will come out. I am working on the model and working on the script. Anyways....I think it is kool that others out there are making short films. I hope to see one of em up soon. Laters
