Hey Buzzers! I'm Mr.3d. I've been a member for a while now...I joined when I needed help with Max's physics engine (reactor) back when I was making my demo reel. I got so much help from the community I decided to start helping others too. Eventually, like most of us, I became an addict.

Educational Background

I have a B.A. in Digital Media from UCF (University of Central Florida), where I learned most of my early 2d and 3d skills. I started working for a year or so and decided to go back for my masters. I ended up with an M.S. in Modeling & Simulation (also from UCF) where I learned all about the simulation industry...which is AWESOME!!! I'm sure I'll blog about it at some point.

Since I became a 3d artist, I've had four jobs where I got to utilize my skills in different ways. I currently work on a 3d harbor simulator used for harbor familiarity training.

Applications I Use
  • 3d Studio Max
  • Maya
  • Creator
  • Photoshop
  • Premiere
  • Inkscape

Hobbies
  • Photography (with my D100)
  • Roller Hockey
  • Creating products to sell on TurboSquid
  • Wasting time on 3d Buzz
  • Building random crap in my garage
  • Paintball
  • Playing with PC Hardware
  • Coin Collecting (So I'm a nerd...sue me)
  • Video Games

Note: This list is in order by how much I enjoy each hobby...not by how often I get to do them(unfortunately).

AAAARGHHH!!!!!!!! I am such an IDIOT!!!!!!

Posted 04-10-2008 at 01:57 PM by Mr3d_PHD (Deep Thoughts with Mr.3d)

I've been a graphic artist for almost 8 years. 4 of those years are professional. You would think that after all of this time, I might learn that it's good practice to SAVE YOUR FREAKIN' WORK!!!

I'm designing "save the dates" for my friend's wedding. There are four photos involved, and I spent a few hours last night modifying the photos and putting together the design. I then spent 30 minutes on my lunch break today making the final touches. Right as I'm about to...

The gaming industry ruined my life!!

Posted 04-04-2008 at 04:08 PM by Mr3d_PHD (Deep Thoughts with Mr.3d)

Note: Do not read this blog if you are trying to make a career for yourself in the gaming industry and you are easily scared.

The following story is true. The names have been changed to protect the innocent (me). A while ago, a buddy of mine (we'll call him Jim) told me a story about how working for a major gaming company (we'll call it EEA Games) ruined his entire life...in every possible way.

He was a happily married guy with a little baby girl when he first began

Mr3d_PHD Bio

Posted 04-04-2008 at 01:52 PM by Mr3d_PHD (Deep Thoughts with Mr.3d)

I'm a 26 year old (as of the date I wrote this - 4/08) married guy with a cat living in Central Florida...one of the most awful states in the US. I've lived here for about 14 years or so, but before that I lived in Long Island, New York. I LOVE it up there. Why don't I move back? Well, for one thing, all of our immediate family (my wife and I) live here, and we plan on having kids soon, so we want them to grow up with their grandparents nearby. For another, we just bought a house last year...

The Simulation Industry - 3) How do I start a career?

Posted 04-04-2008 at 10:20 AM by Mr3d_PHD (Deep Thoughts with Mr.3d)

Anyone interested in 3d modeling or programing can have a fun and productive career in the simulation industry. There are, however, some major differences between what you need to do to get into the gaming industry, and what you need to do to get into the simulation industry.

The gaming industry (generally) is based simply on skill. If you have an amazing demo reel, you shouldn't have much of a problem finding a job. Having a degree can certainly improve your chances...it shows...

Change your blog settings!

Posted 04-03-2008 at 05:34 PM by Mr3d_PHD (Deep Thoughts with Mr.3d)

Click on the "Blog Control Panel" link to your left. There are a lot of options you have access to that are independant from the forums. After clicking the link, you will see several new menu options (also on the left panel).

Among other things, you can make a fun little blog "intro" section which always shows up on the top of your blog page, and you can change your post settings so you receive automatic instant email notifications when someone replies to a...
