well I had the same issue and finally figured out it was a driver issue with my intel graphics driver. I recently updated my graphic driver to intel(R) HD family & then all of a sudden C4D12 started to crash on start up, with the exact bug report as the one you have posted. The only difference is I'm using a 64bit system and just installed the i7 2600k processor. Anyway after searching through the net & finding no solution I went to my device manager & uninstalled the graphic driver update -Intel(R) HD- & restarted my computer. Fired up C4d & it loads up now. Then I went into the preferences under open gl settings and unchecked it. Just so you know I'm not using a graphics card yet . I'm running everything straight off the mother board which I think has to be the reason it's been acting up hope this helps you out good luck

i have this very same problem, i have a new dell xps, geforce 525m , can run c4d 11.5 fine, but when i try to open 12 it crashes on start. i could try and uninstall the intel r hd, but im not sure where in the preferences to disable openGL. I see a bunch of openGL option, could you be more specific on where to check it off. I had to do the same for after effects but that was easier. I appreciate any insight you can give me. Thanks!

This can be fix by installing new C4D update but that can only done when application is running
To run the Application you may uninstall the GFX card driver and use VGA driver then update it.

You may try hold down CTRL + SHIFT (click C4d icon) until
the splash screen disappears. This will reset disable openGL and application may run.

OpenGL mode makes Cinema 4D unstable.
I have also problems with R13 crashing.

For those ho still didn't find a solution to the problem, or trouble..
right mouse click on the cinema 4D icon, "compatibility" choose 256 colors
then start c4d , do the update (around 100-200Mb, not the big one of +800Mb)
    don't choose "restart after installation"
after the update, same , right click c4d , and remove the 256 colors. should work now
my system : Windows 7 , intel HD graphics 3000 (intel core i7)
    cinema 4d R12
